Frederick Douglass Day Transcribe-a-Thon
Join us in the Digital Scholar Studio (GL540), Tuesday February 18th, for Frederick Douglass Day, where we will be celebrating Black History Month and the birthday of Frederick Douglass by participating in the Colored Conventions Project’s annual Douglass Day Transcribe-a-Thon. We’ll be transcribing documents from the Anna Julia Cooper Collection housed at Howard University Libraries–we’ll be in the studio from 10am-2pm, so drop-by between classes, bring your lunch, or hang out with us all day! Coffee and treats will be provided.
What is a transcribe-a-thon?
A transcribe-a-thon is a volunteer party! We’re going to be using the crowdsourcing website Zooniverse to read and transcribe handwritten, digitized, archival documents. This will enhance the documents and make them more accessible for a wider audience. Don’t know how to read cursive? No problem! We’ll provide training and support for all levels of cursive comprehension.
Who is Anna Julia Cooper?
Anna Julia Cooper was a visionary Black feminist author, educator, and activist, and the 4th African American woman ever to receive a PhD. She is most well known for publishing the book A Voice from the South by a Black Woman of the South, what would become a foundational text in Black feminist thought.
